Ordet <em>protein<\/em> kommer fr\u00e5n grekiskan <em>pr\u014dteios<\/em>, som betyder \u201cdet fr\u00e4msta\u201d eller \u201cdet viktigaste\u201d, vilket speglar dess centrala roll i allt levande.<\/p>\n<h3>Vad \u00e4r protein rent kemiskt?<\/h3>\n<p>Ett protein best\u00e5r av l\u00e5nga kedjor av aminosyror, sammanl\u00e4nkade i en sekvens som kallas <strong>polypeptidkedja<\/strong>. Det finns tjugo vanliga aminosyror som kan kombineras p\u00e5 miljontals s\u00e4tt, vilket skapar proteiner med unika former och funktioner. Den sker i tv\u00e5 steg:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transkription<\/strong>: DNA kopieras till mRNA i cellk\u00e4rnan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Translation<\/strong>: mRNA avl\u00e4ses i ribosomerna och byggs om till en polypeptidkedja med hj\u00e4lp av tRNA som levererar r\u00e4tt aminosyror.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Efter syntesen veckas proteinet till sin slutgiltiga form. M\u00e5nga proteiner modifieras dessutom efter\u00e5t genom kemiska f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar som glykosylering eller fosforylering, vilket g\u00f6r dem mer stabila eller ger dem s\u00e4rskilda funktioner.<\/p>\n<h3>Fakta som fascinerar<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Det m\u00e4nskliga genomet inneh\u00e5ller omkring <strong>20 000\u201325 000 gener<\/strong> som kan koda f\u00f6r proteiner.<\/li>\n<li>Kroppen kan sj\u00e4lv producera vissa aminosyror (icke-essentiella), men nio stycken m\u00e5ste tillf\u00f6ras via maten och kallas <strong>essentiella aminosyror<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Proteiner kan vara extremt starka: spindeltr\u00e5d best\u00e5r av proteiner och \u00e4r starkare \u00e4n st\u00e5l i f\u00f6rh\u00e5llande till sin vikt.<\/li>\n<li>Brist p\u00e5 protein kan ge muskelsvaghet, d\u00e5lig s\u00e5rl\u00e4kning och nedsatt immunf\u00f6rsvar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Hur mycket protein beh\u00f6ver kroppen per dag?<\/h3>\n<p>Proteinbehovet varierar beroende p\u00e5 \u00e5lder, k\u00f6n, kroppsvikt och fysisk aktivitetsniv\u00e5. Generellt rekommenderas ett intag p\u00e5 <strong>0,8 gram protein per kilo kroppsvikt<\/strong> f\u00f6r vuxna som inte tr\u00e4nar.
